The mountainous Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki has a reputation for cultural events, museums, churches, culinary delicacies, nightlife and the esplanade. However, the city includes a mountainous side with verdant districts, in which you feel more as if you were in a picturesque village and less in a big city  as Thessaloniki.

At the entrance of the quaint village ‘Hortiatis’ you will face an aqueduct, which has been standing since the Byzantine Empire. It was used to distribute water from the springs of the mountain to the whole city.

Hortiatis is a mountainous district and it is located in the east of Thessaloniki (approximately 20 km from the city centre). The name of the village comes from the foothills of the mountain (Hortiatis), where the city was built. The houses maintain their traditional style. They were not affected by the reconstruction of the rest of the city. Due to the lush vegetation and the trails on the mountain it is offered for walking or hiking combined with exercising in the fresh air. On top of that, is to get a bird’s- eye view of the entire city.

Last but not least, Hortiatis is a martyrdom settlement: 149 people were burnt by the German on the 2nd of September 1944. Nowadays you can view and photograph the war memorial in the town square.

Hortiatis is a worth visiting place all times of the year. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the visitor will relish the serenity, the cool breeze, the nature, the breath taking view, as well as  sample the traditional dishes.
